Nestling right on the edge of the town of Bicester giving access to retail outlets, including the Bicester shopping outlet among others. Hotels, restaurants and all other facilities all within walking distance! Bicester Airfield has been an active airfield for over 80 years - one of Oxfordshire's very first airfields! Gliding started here in 1956 with Windrushers Gliding Club and has continued ever since. Our club fleet of gliders includes two-seater gliders with dual controls for training beginners (all lessons are with qualified gliding instructors), and single-seaters for use by those who reach solo standard. And yes, almost everyone who takes up the sport of gliding goes solo - if you can drive a car, you can fly a glider! Our five-day courses are simply a great way to learn to fly. Whether you are an absolute beginner, or have some experience, the continuity of flying over five days will ensure you make rapid progress. These courses are hands on! From the very first flight you can expect to be handling the aircraft. In the care of one of our highly experienced, BGA-rated instructors you will progress through a carefully structured programme of briefings, demonstrations and flights. If conditions allow, your instructor will take you on extended soaring flights, climbing to around 5,000' in thermal lift over beautiful Oxfordshire. We offer one of the lowest pupil instructor ratios of 2:1. That's important to get the best out of this experience. All our instructors are BGA rated.
As a complete beginner you can realistically expect to be doing almost all the flying by the end of the course. You will almost certainly have mastered general manoeuvring and the winch launch. You will also be well on your way to learning circuit planning and the approach and landing. Faster learners may also have had an introduction to stalling and spinning.
For those with some experience, a holiday course is one of the best ways to consolidate and improve your gliding skills. The continuity of flying over five days ensures rapid progress compared to the stop-start of weekend flying. So, whether you want to go solo, complete a bronze badge, or improve your soaring , a week's course is the perfect option.
We fly the K13 aircraft for this course mainly because it gives plenty of feel and is the near perfect glider to learn to fly in. K21 aircraft are available for more advanced students.

This package is aimed at those who are considering taking up gliding as a sport and want to see if it’s for them. Arrive early, help get the aircraft out and the airfield set up. Stay for the day. All flying will be with the same instructor and if you have time, stay and help to put everything away again. This will help you understand how gliding works at a practical level. We will give you three winch flights in the morning plus a 2000ft aerotow. Weather permitting, we will aim to give you up to one hour’s flying time. And then the same again in the afternoon! You will be provided with a Log Book and a training record card and free coffee and tea.
This is more difficult to gauge than a week's course, but it's likely you will control the aircraft for a lot of the flight once airborne. But don't worry, you will always fly within your own limits! Our aim is to give you a day gliding that is absorbing and fun.
Naturally, this is the ideal way to get back into the sport if you have had a break. With our instructor ratio you are certain to get the best out of the day.

We can do many things at Bicester, but we can't control the British weather. We are able to fly in most conditions, but it becomes unsafe in rain, low-cloud and strong winds. If we lose one or more days to the weather, the first thing we try to do is fly more on the remaining days. If we cannot make up the time, we will offer you a pro-rata refund, or the opportunity to join another course for the balance of days. The bottom line is we want to you to feel you have had value for money, whatever the weather.
All our courses are run by fully-trained, qualified British Gliding Association instructors. We follow the standard BGA training syllabus and training methods.
We use both Schleicher K13 and K21 gliders. The K13 is a highly trusted glider used by a large number of gliding clubs for many years and is regarded as one of the best basic training gliders available. The K21 is a more advanced glider we use in the later part of training and in windy conditions. Depending on the course we also use one of our motor gliders in the early part of training to teach the basic use of the controls, we find this a productive way of enhancing the training.
Most certainty, we would be pleased to see them. We will need to give a safety briefing so they know where they can or not go with safety around the flying area.
